My turn! It's Michigan Craft Beer Month

Wow, haven't been able to get a word in, what with Mr Cicerone brewing up a storm, and blogging about it. So here's a small one......

July is Michigan Craft Beer Month, officially declared by our legislature! Support our local brewers by buying Michigan-made beer this month! Not only will you be helping our local economy, you'll be doing yourself a favour by buying some of the country's finest beers! It's a win-win if I ever saw one!

Here's one beer that will leave you very happy, and refreshed during the hot July days! And, there's a couple of facts in there about the Michigan beer industry, too. (Oops, after watching it, my accent makes it sound like I said "Legislator", but it was, indeed, "Legislature". Us Australians and our weird pronunciations.)

Merchant's event has been cancelled!

Boy, this makes me sad. $30 for over 50 beers, a full buffet, a BJCP styles table, ice cream made from beer from Treat Dreams, and lots of giveaways. We didn't sell ONE SINGLE TICKET. BIG sigh.

Detroit Draft Divas at Merchant's

I recently became a member of said Divas, a group of delightful beer-savvy women (wearing awesome t-shirts) who get together periodically to discover and enjoy the delights of local good craft brew. Honorary Diva Todd Parker from Copper Canyon regularly joins the group, and this past Sunday Merchant's Fine Wine welcomed the Divas into the store for browsing, shopping, a beer scavenger hunt with prizes for winners, and following this, lunch and beers at Fort Street.

Thanks ladies! It was fun. Next time you'll be able to taste some beer, as Merchant's will have its license to do this.

Mmm, Dan Roger's beer!

Big Rock Chophouse is having a beer and food event on Wednesday 11th. There'll be a saison, an imperial stout, an IPA and a "wild card" beer from Big Rock, Kuhnhenn, Short's and Merchant's Fine Wine, each paired with food. Here's more info.

I also believe you can add a "VIP" option to the ticket and hang out with Dan in the brewery (which usually means more beer!)

Nice article about Detroit's "women-in-beer"

This posting deserves much more than just a link to this Metromode article that came out today (I'd love to share some stories about Kristy & Gail and talk about what great women they are- I don't really know Sarah), but I'm here, at Merchant's, with a delivery of 93 cases of beer coming in the door as I write this! So, simply put, it's great to be a part of the craft beer industry, especially here in Michigan, and it's wonderful to be a woman-in-beer! Cheers to Kristy, Gail & Sarah. And to Amy who wrote the article!

Mrs. Cicerone On TV

Annette was asked on somewhat short notice to appear on Channel 2's Saturday morning news show, to plug the Michigan Brewers Guild's Fall Festival. She was in three segments, and managed to get the plug in on the last one. Here are the clips, in the order they appeared:

Being on TV (or in any interview-type situation) is weird. It can be hard to get your information out there when someone else is steering the conversation, under tight time restrictions. Kudos to Mrs. Cicerone for doing a great job under pressure. (Now if I could just get used to being referred to as her 'entourage.') Chef Kelli was very cool, a good communicator, and a consummate professional. Here are links to the recipes from the two segments: Pancakes, Potato Salad, Fondue

The Michigan Brewers Guild Fall Festival will be on October 23rd at Eastern Market, from 1-6PM. More info here.

Aussies love Two Hearted Ale....

See?
Our friends Miro and Barney, the Beer Ambassadors from Melbourne (Australia) spent the day (yesterday) having beery adventures in Michigan. After picking them up at the Amtrak station in Detroit (where they'd arrived from Utica, NY) we went on a wee tour of downtown Detroit, and then headed home for a brief stop so they could have a nice fresh homebrewed Kolsch, made by Mr Cicerone. Then- on to Merchant's for some beer shopping, and then to Ann Arbor where we lunched at the Jolly Pumpkin Cafe. I enjoyed the smoked tofu salad with some Luciernaga (on tap). The guys drank Bam & Bam Noire, and had the magnificent truffled fries, and a pizza each, which they proclaimed to be quite delicious. Ron & Laurie Jeffries chatted to us at the cafe, and then the affable Mr Turriff, AKA The Big Banana, took us on a tour of the brewery- a must for any out-of-town beer nerd.A stop at home to scoop up Mr Cicerone, and then on to Slows BarBQ for beers and dinner. Lots of meat and beers later - Dogfish Festina Peche, Liberty Street Clementine Lemon Thyme (exactly as it sounds, and delicious!), Rochester Mills Cornerstone IPA, Arcadia Angler's Ale, Celis White & Pandemonium Pale Ale- we headed home to taste the wares at Chez Cicerone and howl at the moon. This included Mr Cicerone's Rye Peppercorn Pale Ale, Batch 300 Rye Barley Wine, "Buster" Helles Doppelbock, and some Short's Anniversary Wheat Wine, Bahnhoff Berliner Weisse & Leipziger Gose that Barney & Miro had purchased at Merchant's. At this point I cried "Uncle", we abandoned the Brooklyn Black OPS that was supposed to have been a part of the evening's offerings, and we retired for the evening.

This morning, after a breakfast of Mr Cicerone's IPA, I dropped the guys at the Amtrak station, (along with the aformentioned Brooklyn Black OPS and a couple of cups) where they headed for Chicago. As I write, they are sitting at Hopleaf with Mr Daniels himself, enjoying the beers, food and hospitality of that wonderful establishment.

St Patty's Day feasting tip.....

The ABSOLUTE best beer to go with corned beef is..... DIEU DU CIEL! ROUTE DES EPICES. It's a rye pale ale with black peppercorns from our friends at the Dieu Du Ciel! brewery in Montreal. Merchant's Fine Wine, Dearborn have it on display on the "New & Interesting" beer rack, in the import section under "Q", and in the cooler. Mr Cicerone brews an awesome rye peppercorn pale ale also, but you can only get that one if we like you.

It's called La Parcela, and has just arrived at Merchant's in very limited quantities.
Slows BarBQ will have it on draft for their Jolly Pumpkin beer dinner next Monday. Call for details and to reserve a place as the dinner is limited to 30 people.

New at Merchant's

NEW BEERS!
*DOGFISH HEAD SAH'TEA Sam's take on traditional Finnish SAHTI. Brewed with
rye, juniper & Chai tea. Hmmm, and it WAS interesting. It tasted like juniper and chai tea. Sweet, viscous, a couple of ounces of this was enough for me. We shared this with our homebrew club.
*SOUTHERN TIER CREME BRULEE STOUT (Returns!) A fabulous offering from this great brewery, if you like vanilla caramelly stouts!
*STONE BREWING 13TH ANNIVERSARY ALE They say there are more pounds of hops per barrel in this Imperial Red Ale than in any other beer they have brewed. I'm a little scared.....Our friend Aaron, the rep for Stone, says "drink this one now, while the aromatics are prominent".
*GREAT DIVIDE'S CHOCOLATE OAK-AGED YETI IMPERIAL STOUT. It's got a dash of cayenne pepper in it. Sounds wonderful- can't wait to try this one. While I'm not a big fan of chocolate stout, I love the combination of dark chocolate and chili pepper. It's great in ice cream, and probably good in beer also.
*JOLLY PUMPKIN BAM WEIZEN (Returns)Mmm, lovely summer beer!
*EISENBAHN (Brazil) "LUST". Another lovely beer using the Methode
Champenoise technique. Gorgeous bottle. I've been known to give this one to friends about to be wed.
*HEAVY SEAS (Clipper City Brewing, Baltimore), THE BIG DIPA Double IPA 22oz. I've not had this, but all the Heavy Seas beers are nicely done, and tasty. And, gotta love the piratey theme!
